Standard’s Income Protection for Medical Residents and Dental Students Entering the Military

Military Eligibility, Policy Suspension and Commission.

The Standard is pleased to offer income protection coverage to men and woman in the U.S. military. They accept applications from individuals in the reserves as long as the applicant otherwise qualifies, is not on active duty, and does not have call-up orders, i.e., orders to report for military service.

The Standard also accepts applications from medical and dental residents and fellows who have agreed to serve one year of active service for every year of scholarship received, usually called a military pay-back obligation. Effective August 1, applications from these individuals must be written and result in a placed policy at least six months prior to graduation from a civilian program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the American Osteopathic Association or the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Platinum Advantage allows insureds who are on full-time active duty to suspend a policy for up to five years.* Please note, The Standard will not pay commission while a policy is suspended due to military active duty. When the policy is placed back in force, The Standard will resume payments in the commission year at which the policy is reactivated. For example, if a policy is suspended seven months into the first year of the policy, and then reinstated two years later (at 2 years and 7 months), Standard will pay commission for renewal year three.

The  IDI and the Military FAQ flyer provides more information about eligibility, coverage while on active duty and more.
